Personal profile
Born in 1963, Andrew has lived in and around Bude for most of his life. Educated locally, art featured amongst his selected CSE subjects. After leaving school, Andrew joined the Merchant Navy. During his 10 year service he travelled extensively throughout the world. Influences from the continents he visited are apparent in his art work. After returning to settle permanently in Bude in 1990, he undertook a number of employments in the tourism and leisure industries. Currently, Andrew is employed by Bude & Stratton Town Council as an assistant caretaker/grounds man. Andrew’s interests include cooking, body boarding, walking and golf.
Artist’s profile
Andrew is a self-taught artist, who found art again in the late 1990s after a long absence. He works mainly in oils and acrylics, incorporating sand (from Bude, Cornish and foreign beaches) where he can. He has also experimented in sculpture, having used driftwood in the past and progressing to working with soapstone.
Andrew believes all creativity is a spiritual experience, as an expression of self and life. This firmly held artist philosophy is often displayed in text incorporated within his paintings.
Andrew’s work is semi abstract/abstract, incorporating surrealism as well as figurative and naïve qualities. Andrew takes his inspiration from many sources, though artists whom he particularly admires include: Miro for simplicity; Picasso and Dali for their vision; Kandinsky for his shape and form; Heron for the use of colour; and Nicholson for divineness.
Previously a member of Bude Arts Society (with which he exhibited for three years), Andrew co-founded Bude Arts Modern in 2004 with another local artist Chris Robeson. The core aim of Bude Arts Modern is to exhibit new work and to give local people and visitors to the town the opportunity to view modern art. BAM has held an annual exhibition in Bude since its formation.
Andrew has a passionate desire to establish and promote Bude as an alternative centre for modern art in Cornwall. He hopes that his work will prove to be a valuable step along the path toward achieving this ambition.
